Welcome to Lisbon!

Lisbon, as the capital of Portugal, is a very popular tourist destination, which is expected given the number of attractions which await you here - the pleasant climate, world-famous gastronomy created under the influence of Africa, Asia and America, but also many monuments and buildings with Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Baroque, Modern and Postmodern architecture.

If you arrive in Lisbon by plane, we suggest you pick up a vehicle at our Carwiz office located within the Humberto Delgado Airport to make sure you don't miss wonderful monuments in the upper quarters' boulevards such as Avenida da Liberdade, Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo, Avenida Reis and Avenida da República. Here you'll find great nightlife, the inevitable Porto, a paradise for true gourmet cooks, and if you catch some extra time, we suggest a tour of museums, theatres and parks just outside the city bustle.

In addition to classic sightseeing of the lively Chiado district of Lisbon, the popular Bairro Alto where you are guaranteed a rich nightlife, Carmo, enjoyable day and night, the river Tejo and the magical Alfama, you should definitely visit some museums. The first of these is the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, which houses treasures of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Asian and European art.

There you'll find Gulbenkian's collection of works of art, one of the richest people of the 20th century who left it to Portugal in 1955 after his death at the age of 86. Here, among other things, you can see Japanese works of art, rare Chinese porcelain and 2700-year-old preserved bowls, but also works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Monet, Van Dyck and others.

If you find yourself in Portugal's neighborhood Lapa, visit the National Museum of Ancient Art, which exhibits various works stemming from the 14th to the 20th century.

The most interesting piece is a cutlery set, brought by Vasco da Gama, the famous Portuguese explorer.

In want of something more modern, visiting the Design and Fashion Musem is a great idea. It exhibits Portuguese businessman Francisco Capelo's fashion collection including Renee Zellweger's evening gown she wore at the 2001 Oscars, as well as Christian Dior's 1947 "New Look" collection.

After returning to the picturesque streets of Lisbon, discover the beauty of river Tejo, which flows into the sea at the very edge of this magical city.

If you want even more history, visit The Belem District, Portugal's historic seafaring landmark where Portuguese sailors Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco da Gama, and many others sailed off on expeditions, while Christopher Columbus stopped here on his way back to Europe, discovering the New World.

Round off your visit to Lisbon with good food, wine, always kind and cheerful “Lisboaetas" and fado, the soul of Portuguese music.
